If you grew up around paan, you already know the taste. If you didn't, it is the flavour you keep seeing on hookah menus and never quite get explained. Here is the explanation.
First, what paan actually is
Outside the hookah world, paan is a South Asian preparation: a betel leaf folded around a filling and eaten after a meal. There are many versions. The one people usually mean when they talk about the flavour is sweet paan — the kind filled with things like fennel seeds, rose-petal preserve, coconut and cardamom, eaten as a mouth-freshener and a small treat at the end of dinner or a wedding.
A paan-flavoured shisha borrows that taste. It is flavoured shisha like any other on the menu; the name tells you what it is meant to taste like, not what is in the bowl.
What paan hookah tastes like
If you have never had it, the easiest way to describe it is by what it is not:
- Not fruity. There is no berry or citrus in the base flavour.
- Not a mint. It finishes fresh and a little cool, but it is not an ice-mint.
- Not a dessert. It is sweet, but more perfumed than sugary.
What it is: sweet, floral and aromatic, with rose and fennel up front, a warm note like cardamom underneath, and a green, leafy freshness at the end. People who like it tend to love it, and people who grew up with sweet paan often say the first draw tastes like the end of a family dinner.
It is a flavour with a memory attached for a lot of people. That is a big part of why it is on every hookah menu in a city like Fremont.
Why it works so well in a mix
On its own, paan is round and perfumed. What it lacks is a bright edge, and that is exactly what a second flavour gives it. That is why most people meet paan in a mix rather than by itself. Our house mixes use it four different ways:

All fourteen house mixes are included in the price of the hookah — a regular hookah is $20, a glass hookah $25. No extra for picking a mix.
Which one should you order?
- Never tried paan? Start with #7. The paan is a pinch, so you taste it without it taking over. If you like it, go further next time.
- Curious but careful? #4, paan and orange. Bright, friendly, easy to share with a table that has mixed tastes.
- Already a paan person? #5 or #6. These keep paan at the centre of the bowl.

Building your own
You can mix up to three single flavours in one bowl, included in the price. If you want paan with something that is not on the house list, ask at the counter which singles are on hand that night and build it with us. Fruits such as orange and apple are the classic partners; a mint is the classic way to make it feel lighter.
