What should I expect at a hookah lounge for the first time?

You will be asked for ID at the door, seated at a table, and asked which hookah and flavour you want. The hookah arrives already lit, and staff come back through the night to change the coals. A session typically runs sixty to ninety minutes.

Nobody explains this anywhere, so people turn up braced for some kind of test. There isn't one. Here is the whole thing, start to finish.

At the door

Bring your ID. This is the one thing people get caught out by. California sets the tobacco age at 21, so every hookah lounge in the state is 21+ whether or not there is alcohol in the building — and we check every single person, every single time, however old you look. If one person in a group of six forgot their wallet, that person is not coming in. It is not us being difficult; it is our licence.

Digital IDs and passports are fine. Expired ones are not.

Sitting down

You seat yourselves in most lounges, ours included. Grab a table or a booth, and if there are more of you than the table holds, ask and we will push tables together.

There is no minimum spend and no cover charge. Two people can happily share one hookah — that is the normal way to do it, not a cheapskate move.

Ordering, without needing to know the vocabulary

You are choosing two things: which hookah, and which flavour.

The hookah is mostly about the build — a regular at $20 is what most tables order and there is nothing basic about it. A glass one at $25 pulls a little cleaner. The fruit hookah at $65 is a whole pineapple and is meant for a table, not a person.

The flavour is where people freeze. Do not overthink it: ask for a house mix and say roughly what you like — "something minty", "something sweet", "not too strong". We have built and numbered these combinations precisely so that nobody has to construct one from scratch on their first visit. There is a fuller guide here if you would rather read ahead.

Saying "I have never done this, what would you give me?" is a completely normal thing to say at the counter. It is asked several times a night.

It arrives lit

The hookah comes to the table already packed and burning. You do not light anything, and you do not touch the coals — they are around 400°C and they are handled with tongs for a reason.

Then:

Draw slowly. The instinct is to pull hard like a straw. Don't. A long, gentle draw gives more smoke and a far better taste; a hard one scorches the tobacco and makes it harsh.
Pass the hose, handing it over rather than pointing the mouthpiece at someone. That is the entire etiquette.
If it fades or tastes sharp, wave someone down. That means the coals need turning or replacing. It is included in the price and you are not being a nuisance — a fading bowl is our problem to fix, and we would much rather do it than have you sit through a bad session politely.

How long you are there

A bowl runs about sixty to ninety minutes. Nobody will rush you off the table afterwards; plenty of people order a refill at $15 and keep going, and plenty just stay with tea and cards.

What it costs

Two people sharing a regular hookah with a drink each comes to roughly $28 before tax. That is the realistic number for a first visit.

Things worth knowing before you come

We do not serve alcohol. Never have. Tea, energy drinks, sodas, juices and snacks. For a lot of people that is the appeal — there is a whole piece on that here.
You will smell of it afterwards. Hair and jacket, mostly. It washes out.
Eat first. Hookah on an empty stomach makes some people lightheaded. If that happens, step outside for air and drink some water — it passes.
It is tobacco. Shisha is a tobacco product and it carries the risks that come with that. We would rather say so plainly than pretend otherwise.
Parking is street and shared lot. We have no lot of our own. On a Friday or Saturday night, park a block down and walk.

Come on a quiet night first

If you want space to work it out without a crowd, come early in the week. Thursdays there is live belly dance from 9 PM with no cover, which is a great night but a busy one. We are at 37381 Fremont Blvd, open till 1 AM Monday to Thursday and 2 AM Friday to Sunday. You can build the whole order on your phone beforehand if you would rather not do it at the counter.
